RAAM Crew Anyone?

I am looking for a few good folks to support me on my next great adventure, Solo Race Across America 2011, which will be the 30th running of the race. I have raced solo RAAM 3 times previously in 2006, '07, and '08. The first outing in '06 was a DNF but I came back to set over 60 average speed records in '07 and '08. For 2011 I am looking to go even faster.

The race starts in Oceanside California on Tuesday June 14th and finishes in Annapolis Maryland by Friday June 24, if all goes well. Previous crew or ultra cycling experience is not necessary to crew on RAAM but a willingness to devote your self to the team and enjoy the experience of a lifetime is a must. I am entered as a solo racer, but it is anything but solo. It is very much a team effort and every member of the team is crucial. Crew duties include driving both the follow vehicle and small RV, navigating using the official route book and a GPS linked lap top, preparing, tracking, and handing off rider food and fluids, directing and coaching the rider over a PA, as well as specialized duties such as bike maintenance and massage if you have those skills. I have an experienced crew chief who knows what it takes to get a racer to the finish line and who can train you on-the-job so don't worry about not knowing what to do. You will quickly learn the ropes. If you plan to crew for a rookie racer sometime or would like to race yourself, I think you will find that the education you get going with an experienced team will pay rich rewards.

Although it is desirable that you crew wire to wire, it is not necessary. I have worked it out for crew members to swap out mid-race, with my thanks, because they could only spare 3-4 days. Of course, I cover your expenses including food, lodging, and airline tickets to the start/mid race swap location and return home. For more background on the race itself, check out the About Tab on the RAAM website. If you are interested and would like to hear more about it, please feel free to contact me via email at DJSTAZ@aol.com or phone 818-882-9552.

Best Regards,
David Jones
